Contextual Fit

ARC 257- Project 2
IMG_2604_edited_edited.jpg

The objective of this project was to design an addition to the famous Smith House, originally designed by architect Richard Meier. The new design however, must align with Meier's design elements and current structure, as well as fit on the existing site.

Narrative

The Roy family has recently purchased and moved into the famous Smith House, located on the coast of Connecticut overlooking the Long Island Sound. Their family loves to spend time together, but there just aren’t enough spaces for them in this house. They want to expand the house to fit their preferences while also keeping the original design of the house that they loved in the first place.

The couple has asked for a  a master suite upstairs. Mr. Roy has had some health concerns and would like to have an exercise room in their home.  Mrs. Roy would like a roof garden, since the soil here makes things a little difficult to grow. The children love birds, and they are often seen in this area, so their mother wants to build a family room that they can spend their time in and birdwatch together.

Conceptual Meta-Idea

I have chose to incorporate the triangle shape into my design because i believed it would fit the narrative. The triangle is a simple and workable shape that still shows a clear hierarchy in relation to the existing structure. I also felt that it would symbolize the shape of a bird's body.
